What is yoga?

Yoga is a philosophy and practice that began in India some 5,000 years ago. Its main goal is to know the self and develop overall health and wellbeing. The term yoga comes from a Sanskrit word meaning “union”. The practice of yoga includes physical, mental, and spiritual exercises meant to unite our body, mind and spirit.

What does Shanti mean?

Shanti is the Sanskrit word for peace.

What is a typical class like?

You will find that the classes are varied and will always challenge and inspire. Though each teacher has their own style, the classes are well-rounded and provide more challenging or less challenging options for everyone’s comfort within the class. Students are always encouraged to go at their own pace. We begin the class with a few minutes of breathing and centering to slow down and shift the focus away from our busy days and external influences, followed with the recitation of OM. We then move through a series of warm-ups and into the practice of asanas (yoga postures) according to class level. Some classes will use props such as straps and foam blocks to support and deepen an asana. The classes wind down with a deep relaxation. (Savasana- the “corpse pose”) Followed by OM to end the class. Everyone leaves the classes feeling more alive, grounded and peaceful than when they came in!

What is Om?

Om is the sacred symbol of ancient Indian Sanskrit. Om is the seed of all sounds, encompassing past, present, and future. It is that which we cannot put into words. At Shanti, Om provides a familiar start and end to yoga classes, bringing the group together and is used as a mantra to center ourselves and to let go of our busy minds.

What do I need to bring?

We suggest you bring your own mat; otherwise we have plenty of mats and props that are free to use. We also have mats for purchase, if you would like to buy your own. Wear comfortable clothes that you can move freely in. Please refrain from wearing perfumes or strong fragrances as people may have allergies or sensitivities.

I am not flexible, can I still do yoga?

Of course! In our classes, your comfort is our main concern. Whether you can touch your toes or not, we adapt the postures using props so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of yoga. One of the many benefits of practicing yoga on a regular basis is that your flexibility will increase, as well as your balance, strength and peace of mind.

Injuries, mobility problems and other health problems.

Yoga postures can be adapted for most conditions. We would be happy to discuss the appropriate class for you. Please inform the instructor if you have any injuries or health problems before the class begins. If you have a particular injury or health problem, doing a few private classes to asses and adapt before joining classes work great. We provide on-going private sessions. Please contact the studio for more information.
